Joseph McMullen was a member of the 68th Naval Construction Battalion under the command of the 9th Naval Construction Regiment. On 20 May 1945, the 68th sailed on their second embarkation from Attu, Alaska to Okinawa and camped at Tengan. Seabees played a key role in the seizure of Okinawa.
